California Aviation Companies Flying to Fort Worth

Thursday, June 23rd, 2016
Lockheed plant

Lockheed Martin assembles the JSF-35 in Fort Worth.

Submitted by David Berzina, CEcD, FM, Executive Vice President of Economic Development for the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce

Traditionally, people associate the greatest volume of aviation and aerospace activity in the U.S. with destinations such as Southern California or Washington State. They are often surprised to learn that Fort Worth, Texas is the second largest aviation cluster in the nation, just behind the greater Los Angeles area. In fact, the aviation industry contributed more than $40 billion to the North Texas economy in 2014. We anticipate this industry influence will strengthen over the next five years as Fort Worth remains an attractive option for California aviation manufacturers seeking relocation and expansion opportunities in a less restrictive regulatory environment.

According to the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, employment in the state’s aviation sector is down 40 percent since 2004 because a number of airplane parts manufacturers have been steadily leaving Southern California. Their loss has been Fort Worth’s gain. So far this year, Fort Worth welcomed two of these companies.

In April, Calcomp, Inc. announced plans to move its manufacturing operations from Santa Fe Springs, California to a 250,000-square-foot facility in north Fort Worth. The company, which manufactures commercial engine composites that reduce aircraft weight and increase fuel efficiency, is relocating 15 employees from California and plans to hire 30-35 North Texans. Fred Donnelly, president of Calcomp, Inc., says that he selected Fort Worth based on its central geographic location and because city leaders made him feel welcome in this community. Despite his presence in California for more than seven decades, Donnelly says that new requirements going into effect in Southern California over the next ten years will be extremely harmful to his business.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Buddy Tobin of C&S Propeller when his company announced plans in May to move its headquarters from Burbank, California to Fort Worth. He cited the city’s “business friendly” environment and its deep roots in the aviation and aerospace industry as appealing factors. Founded in 1968, C&S Propeller is one of the world’s foremost experts in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the propeller systems used on the Lockheed C130 Hercules aircraft. With more than 1,400 aircraft in military and civilian operation, the Lockheed C130 is one of the largest and most widely used air transport fleets. The company plans to hire 12 North Texans to support its operations.

Fort Worth’s reputation as a desirable location for aviation and aerospace companies is not something that happened overnight. In fact, it dates back to 1911 when the first-ever powered flight in Fort Worth soared above a crowd of 17,000 spectators. Afterwards, private investors such as Amon G. Carter, Sr. worked with city leaders to lure more aviation companies to the community. The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce was also engaged in recruiting aviation companies by gathering data for the U.S. War Department about the city and its industrial capacity. These efforts culminated in 1941, when Fort Worth secured an Army bomber assembly plant which is known today as Lockheed Martin. The construction of Meacham Field and Carswell Air Force Base, now known as Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, further cemented the city’s foothold in the nation’s aviation industry.

In the years following World War II, Fort Worth rapidly emerged as an aerospace hub. It is now home to some of the world’s largest aviation companies, including American Airlines, Bell Helicopter Textron and Lockheed Martin, along with hundreds of related suppliers who provide everything necessary to get aircraft off the ground.

California aviation companies are not the only ones investing in Fort Worth. A number of highly influential brands that have been in this city for decades are expanding their presence. For example, last year Lockheed Martin announced plans for a $1.2 billion upgrade to its mile-long facility. The company is also adding approximately 1,000 employees to accommodate an aggressive production schedule for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the largest national defense program in our nation’s history. The company currently employs approximately 13,000 in North Texas, with 8,800 dedicated to production of the F-35. Lockheed Martin also has at least 73 North Texas suppliers which provide an additional 10,000 jobs and support 28,000 indirect positions.

American Airlines is another local aviation company that recently reinforced its commitment to Fort Worth. The world’s largest airline announced plans to spend $350 million on construction of a new 1.1 million-square-foot headquarters at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The expansion will result in the addition of 5,000 jobs.

The city’s deep roots in the aviation industry have created a highly skilled workforce that California companies find extremely attractive. The large volume of military personnel with substantial expertise in defense programs, engineering and avionics support the region’s aerospace workforce of more than 22,000. Roughly one out every five North Texans are employed, in some aspect, by the region’s aviation industry, resulting in an annual payroll of about $11 billion.

In order to keep this pipeline primed, representatives from Fort Worth’s aviation community have partnered with Tarrant County College (TCC) on specialized training and certification programs. They include the FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification, as well as a certificate and degree program in avionics. In 2015, TCC partnered with Alliance Aviation Services to launch the Erma C. Johnson Hadley Center of Excellence for Aviation, Transportation and Logistics at Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Housed in a renovated 163,500-square-foot facility that was previously used by Bell Helicopter, the program specifically focuses on teaching students the necessary skills for their future employers to remain leaders in the aerospace industry.

California’s aerospace companies are flying to Fort Worth in response to our central geographic location, favorable business environment, rich aviation history and current position as one of the top aviation and aerospace clusters in the nation. Their addition to the city’s current roster of distinguished aviation companies will only strengthen our position in this constantly growing economic sector.

Chamber knocks out 232 new members in boxing-themed campaign

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

Get in the ring with the largest Chamber in the DFW metroplex.

Executives wore costumes, blasted 80s music and made phone calls around a boxing ring made of balloons at Lena Pope’s Amon Carter Center February 23-24, all a part of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce’s “In Your Corner” membership drive, a campaign to sign up new Chamber members.

Two hundred volunteer business owners and executives made phone calls over two days, while the event’s facilitator, “enter-trainer” Jimmy Cusano, cheered on the volunteers in bright colored zoot suits. Volunteers rang the bell every time a new member was registered.

See the crazy photos from the event here!

Last year’s member event catapulted Fort Worth’s chamber to become the largest in North Texas. This year, the chamber brought in 210 new members and counted 2, 300+ total business members at the end of the drive. Some memberships are still coming in.

“The more there is of us, the greater our resources become to help businesses meet 21st century challenges,” said Bill Thornton, president and CEO of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce. “Greater membership means greater Chamber strength, support and enthusiasm in contending with all of the issues that businesses face these days- from how to find qualified workers to taxation and healthcare.”

The two-day event was organized by Cusano and Your Chamber Connection (YCC), a North Richland Hills-based group dedicated to high-energy membership campaigns that allow volunteers to enjoy ‘out of the box’ membership fun while building the membership base.

The chamber recruited twelve chairmen for the event who were responsible for recruiting 44 team captains, who then recruited team members to make calls to prospects. Volunteers ranged from luxury realtors to non-profit executives, police officers to university presidents.

The twelve chairmen were Neils Agather, Burnett Oil Co., Inc; John Avila, Thos. S. Byrne, Ltd; John Black, Merrill Lynch & Co; Tim Carter, Southside Bank; Craig Harbuck, Higginbotham; and Robert Mitchell, WhitneySmith Company; Geoffrey Seiber, FranFund, Inc.; Mark Walker, Weaver; Wade Wallace, Southwest Bank – SW Loop 820; Brian Chase, Bell Helicopter-Textron, Inc.; Michael Appleman, Cantey Hanger; and Cynthia Sadler, Bank of Texas.

Commercial Real Estate Forecast: New residents drive major development

The influx of new residents in Fort Worth will help drive 10,500 acres of development for the city’s commercial real estate market in 2016, according to experts at the Tarrant County Commercial Real Estate Forecast held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Jan. 21.

According to extrapolation of census figures, 65 people move into Fort Worth every day.

“The big takeaway is the pace and scale of growth in south and southwest Fort Worth,” said David Berzina, executive vice president of economic development for the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce.

Properties between Chisholm Trail and the Walsh Ranch development could see 88,000 new residents by the end of the next decade. The 7,200-acre Walsh Ranch development in eastern Parker County is 11.37 square miles, a larger area in size than the suburbs of Bedford and Hurst.

“It will be exciting and interesting to watch,” Berzina said. “Residential growth will create new retail and commercial opportunities.”

Retail markets were a major focus in the forecast. Ridgmar Mall, a shopping center in West Fort Worth, is expecting two departures in 2017, Nieman Marcus and Macy’s. Despite the loss, commercial real estate experts are optimistic.

Berzina and Stephen Coslik, chairman of The Woodmont Company, both said the mall should capitalize on its openings and reinvent itself as new residents come to Fort Worth.

“Demand creates opportunity and Ridgmar will continue to be viable,” Berzina said, especially with Walsh Ranch coming online due west of the mall.

For more details, see a PDF of Berzina’s presentation here.

Panther Island, Fort Worth’s 800-acre development, will also gain a 200-unit multi-family apartment community, which Berzina announced at the event. The Trinity River Vision Authority, the organization in charge of Panther Island projects, will also finish building three interior bridges by 2018, completing the project’s next step before large-scale development begins.

The Forecast panelists predicted the city’s Central Business District (CBD) will grow due to the amount of overcrowding in suburbs. The CBD currently has 150,000 square feet of available office space in downtown.

On the commercial side, oil prices are forcing many companies to sublease their space in downtown, providing new opportunities for business in the CBD. Todd Burnette, managing director at JLL Commercial Brokerage, predicted another 100,000 square feet to hit the market this year.

While low oil prices have many worried, only 2.2 percent of the city’s job base is reliant on energy, according to Jones Lang LaSalle. “It is affecting our economy, but not to the extent it would have 10 years ago,” Berzina said.

In the past year, Fort Worth held the second highest recorded level of commercial and residential permit activity in the city’s history, with 11,320 permits valued at more than $2.34 billion. The construction costs were only $10 million below development in 2013, the top year for permit valuations and an historic year in economic growth.

The Forecast also noted the rise of home prices and rental rates. Annual rents in Fort Worth grew by 6.8 percent in 2015 and growth is expected to be even stronger in the next year. Home prices were also said to be rising faster than rental rates, which could result in more young professionals moving to apartments.

Dallas-Fort Worth became the nation’s fourth largest industrial market in 2015, grabbing 18.5 million square feet of net absorption.
