The West Area of Tarrant County definitely has its own personality. The near west includes exclusive homes and neighborhoods and is home to many of the city founders’ descendants. It is home to Fort Worth’s Cultural District with some of the nation’s top art museums, such as the Kimbell, the Modern and the Amon Carter, as well as the popular Museum of Science and History. The Will Rogers Memorial Center and Casa Mañana Theatre are also tourist attractions, all positioned at the east end of historic Camp Bowie Boulevard, which stretches to the outer west side. With Lockheed Martin manufacturing plant and the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, the west side has long been the defense stronghold of Tarrant County. Suburbanites enjoy Lake Worth and Benbrook Lake with much room to grow toward Weatherford.
The Amon Carter Museum of American Art - Amon G. Carter (1879–1955) was for most of his life Fort Worth's leading citizen and champion. One of his greatest legacies resides in his provision for the establishment of a museum in Fort Worth devoted to American art, free and open to the public. While Amon Carter's personal collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell still forms the core of the museum's holdings, the museum has evolved over the past five decades into one of the nation's great collections of American art, drawing visitors from around the world.
