Chute, yeah! Texas Rangers President Nolan Ryan and son NoBGood, president of his cubicle at Fidelity Investments, share Jan. 30 as a birthday. So Mr. B told boss Miserly Mistress that Nolan wanted to celebrate with NoBGood at the Stock Show Rodeo. (Nolan is going to check out the beef, which could end up in a grocery store near you.) Miserly thought the request was novel, and fictional. She relented, though, and offered the Chamber's Jan. 30 six box seats and parking pass, but only if NoBGood didn't partake. “And...I don't care if it is a blind drawing, if Nolan enters the giveaway, make sure he wins,” Miserly mused.

Can't beat these eats: If you're like Mr. B, you're probably drooling about the delicacies being served at the Taste of the NFL at the Fort Worth Convention Center the night before the big game. And if you're like Mr. B, that $550-$650 ticket is a deal breaker. So, if we're going to be sidelined, what could be the next best thing? Tickets to the game? Yeah, right! How about the NBC Sunday Night Football NFL Cookbook? We've got all the greatest chefs' recipes. (Mr. B can't keep it hisownself, so he already photocopied each page.) You could be in for ecstatic eating with recipes from Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse and more than 60 Taste of the NFL chefs and players.

Always sunny in Sundance: Mr. B asked Ms. G--Tracy Gilmour at Sundance Square -- for a couple of gift cards as a little Super Bowl/ESPN spending money for a giveaway. “How much?” she asked. “Maybe a hundred.” So B figured two $50s. Tracy misunderstood and sent two $100s. Now, it's one gift card for Mr. B and one for readers if the editors don't read this. B is thinking about a Mike and Mike before-and-after diet t-shirt and an ESPN cap. What will you do with your $100?

Meet & greet: Melissa Neuman, the expressive & sweet assistant GM and Director of Sales at Holiday Inn Express & Suites in southwest Fort Worth, was helping Mr. B decide which speech he should give to better fill her 40-person conference room at the hotel: “Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals in the 1990s” or Job Openings That Pay $100k a Year.” Maybe you've got a better idea for a meeting...or a speech. If so, Melissa is offering a complimentary room rental for any group meeting, good for up to 40 peeps.

Kick start: When ESPN's Mike and Mike show begins coverage in the dark of Sundance Square Monday morning, there's a good chance they will be wearing their custom Justin boots. “We knew we wanted to be a part of giving them the Cowtown experience,” said Justin's boot-scootin' marketer Lisa Lankes. “They loved the idea. A few of us went up to their headquarters in Bristol and corporate office in New York City and got more than 100 of them fitted. They're black cowhide with the ESPN logo embroidered on the upper.”

Couldn't keep a job: Kent Nix, husband of TCU cheerleader and Warren Douglas marketing whiz Susan Nix, was a QB for three of the NFL playoff teams last weekend - Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Chicago.

Name dropping: One of the 13 editors says we need to change the name of Newz-E-Letter and Mr. B is thinking he should change his name, too, and the possibilities are Don or Dawn or Chig. Mr. B never had heard the name Chig before he saw the Am-Bass-Adorables' ribbon-cutting schedule for this Friday. The running with scissors group will be at Chig's Sports Bar & Grill at 1201 Longhorn Road. You can see ribbon-cutting and Business After-Hours photos at the Chamber website.

Getting too big for small? Small Business of the Year finalist JODesign also is helping the economy recover. Owner Jennifer Henderson has purchased the building at 440 South Main and will move her crew there during the spring. It's a 1920ish building that will be renovated for a “creative working environment.”

21st century leader: Nothing old school at Fort Worth Academy, a K-8 private school specializing in arts education. It has received the 2011 School Spotlight Award by the Lausanne Laptop Institute, recognized because its laptop/tablet program serves as an international model of innovation and expertise.

Super rescue: Super this, Super that and you're probably thinking Super traffic mess, right?
Not if you plan ahead with the City of Fort Worth's website: http://www.fortworthgov.org/superweek/ It has street closures, maps, shuttle info, events, announcements and links to partner organizations for everything Super in Fort Worth.

15 miles and smiles of fame: Attorney Charles Florsheim of Cantey Hanger is being featured in a D magazine ad and billboards at Love Field and seven other locations. Florsheim, a non-smoker, is a lung cancer survivor and advocate for funding to fight the disease. The ads are for the Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center at UT Southwestern.

KFC: Kudos for Concussion, an advertising, marketing and public relations firm, which won an international Graphis Gold Award for a casino lounge's advertising campaign. The campaign is featured in Graphis' 100 Best Advertising Annual 2011.

More brownies for us: Some extra delectable desserts are available at Z's Cafe because Carlo Capua is trying to shed 24 pounds to 175 with a processed food purification diet. He is, however, eating all the fruit.

Fawning on Frogs: What the BCS didn't realize, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship did. It named TCU's Neeley the No. 1 undergraduate entrepreneurship program in the U.S. Brad Hancock runs the program, which was founded by David Minor.

Riverdance: Erma Hadley Johnson opened her recent Chamber luncheon remarks with a Tina Turner reference, which seems appropriate because the Tarrant County College Chancellor has a new Trinity River East annex ready to roll on down the river. The annex will include allied health care programs -- nursing, radiology, physical therapy, respiratory care, long-term care and dental hygiene. There will be a simulated hospital and future additions could include occupational therapy and sonography programs. In other comments:

  • Nine of every 10 first responders in Tarrant County -- fire academy, EMS, RNs -- are trained at TCC.
  • There are 136,000 health care jobs in Tarrant, with $13.6 billion in health care spending. The licensure pass rate at TCC is 96%.
  • If you are 65 or older, you can attend TCC for free.

Bean counting: City Life Center on Florence Street has a new in-house coffeehouse and pastor Mark Williams says the coffee -- from the same beans he had purchased -- tastes better “because I'm not making it.” BTW, a new business inspiration group has organized and meets there every Tuesday.

She needs a promotion: Pepper-L Specialties is a promotional item company owned by Pepper Hudson. Her products definitely are discretionary items for individuals and businesses, not a necessity. Yet her business was up 120 percent in 2010, her best year in 16 years of business. What recession?

When is a job fair not a job fair? Boss Miserly Mistress told Mr. B he ought to be looking for some part-time work in case the Chamber fails to renew his contract in April. So B is heading to the Feb. 2 Job Links Excelerator at Texas Wesleyan University. It's not a job fair, reads the Chamber website. It “connects the business community and organizations working with qualified job applicants. It produces positive results for the business community in their recruitment and retention efforts.”

Sign of the times: Bill Swift is now GM at Paladin Signs & Graphics and has hired Linda Livingston to replace him as sales manager.

Early bird specials: Tim Trammell is the new (and first) business development manager for new Chamber member AM Design. The North Richland Hills website design/social media and more firm has a rooster on its business card. Call early; they may only work mornings.

Take me to the pilot: Consultant Gary Chenoweth of Professional Energy Management also is an American Airlines pilot, where, we hope, he doesn't need consulting. He is, however, re-training because his international flights are switching from 777s to 767s.

Honorable: The timely announcement yesterday that Downtown Fort Worth Inc. and its JFK Tribute Committee have solidified plans for a John F. Kennedy bronze statue tribute in General Worth Square reminded Mr. B that the President spent his last night and morning in Fort Worth at what was then the Texas Hotel, now the Hilton Fort Worth. Kennedy spoke to Fort Worth Chamber members at a breakfast before the fateful assassination that afternoon in Dallas. He was the last US president to address the Chamber. The JFK Tribute is planned for May 2012.
