Yu can, too: New media dervish Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers popped into Del Frisco's recently while Mr. B was bumming leftovers from proprietor Greg Kalina. Greg called Catholic Charities to Red Rover, Red Rover, send a translator right over and 15 minutes later we were a foursome feasting on steak and sushi. Ain't America great? Yu predicts 14 victories hisownself, a Yu-Youkilis beanbrawl and a Rangers World Series victory. Greg was u-phoric and comped our meal. He's comping this dinner for two for U2.
Guy stuff: Terry Ellis of Car Concepts thought last week's giveaways for Valentine's Day were a bit girly-girly. Terry knows the scoop and has the perfect gift for that perfect guy? Give him this one free oil change with lube job at Small Business of the Year finalist Downtown Garage. Either he can keep it or ask/tell him to take your car in...part of the honey-do list for Valentine's Day. |

Mean, clean steam machine: The Prospective Ms. B says the B Mansion is orderly, but not clean. To prove it, she rented a va-va-voom Dyson vacuum and filled it with enough receded hairline to produce toupees for Mr. B and six other Newz-E-Letter readers...you know who you are. You are only kidding yourownself if you think your floors are any better. Steve Willis at Steamatic can prove it, too. He'll bring the steam machine over and do three rooms of carpets. You'll love Mr. Clean.
Labor of love: Mr. B misses Chamber intern Corinne DeFord, who escaped as quickly as possible (see below), because there is no one for him to boss around all day. Not to worry for long, though, because TCU career-ist Ashley Leonardt Grubbs (she added the Leonardt, which is a mystery) has the solution to your question: “Now who is going to fetch lunch?” The TCU Career and Intern Expo is February 15 from 4-7 p.m. and you can meet the best and brightest. This company registration is good for one employer to bring two representatives and it includes a booth and a meal (for) trey.
The intern and the King: Last year, Corinne DeFord, who is not Frank's daughter and who can't identify one cooking utensil, was an intern with the Chamber. Despite her vehement protests, she drew Mr. B as a mentor. Under his tutelage we're proud to report that she has started her own business as a special events contractor (YWCA and Camp Fire have signed on) and she will be married and cooked for beginning April 26 to Ellerbe's restaurant owner Richard King.
Loose lips: Ricky Stephenson, the CEO of Small Business of the Year finalist Car Concepts, won a night's stay in a suite at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel Fort Worth. Ricky said it was perfect timing because he would give it to his wife for a Feb. 26 anniversary gift. Mr. B promised Ricky he wouldn't do a tell-all because wife Sherry Stephenson is a “loyal and consistent” reader of Newz-E-Letter.
Shared sales strategy: Mack Patel at Motel 6 off Oakland has had better year-over-year numbers for 15 straight months. His secret? “We don't go crazy for new business. We take care of our employees (almost no turnover) and they take care of our existing customers.”
S.B. mulligan? About this time a year ago, electricity was out, we were ice/snowed under and ESPN bravely was broadcasting from Sundance Square. Someone should send 2012 update pictures to the Super Bowl committee in Indianapolis.

Mann, oh mann, tough break: Shellie Mann is recuperating, but moving gingerly after surgery for a dynamic bone break in her left leg. The good news for the Main Event sales manager was that it was her last run of her last day skiing at Winter Park, Colorado.
Welcome to AARP: Congrats to the American Paint Horse Association (APHA), which turns 50 Feb. 16. It began in Gainesville, TX., and has registered more than one million horses. Fifty years to the day, a reception will be held at the Chili's restaurant in Gainesville, site of the old Curtwood Motel, one of the places where the founders met. A historical marker is planned for the site. In October, an inaugural class of 25 members and 25 horses will be inducted into the new APHA Hall of Fame. |
Name game: Mr. B asked Jesus "Jay" Chapa if he had any trouble living up to the name? “Jay?” he asked. “No.” The City of Fort Worth Business Development boss said there were six Jesuses in his kindergarten in Mercedes, TX. Chapa soon went by J.J. By high school, there were three Jesuses, so he was just Jay. That's better than one of the three, who was called Chivo, which is goat.
Shout out: To Ben Muro, senior veep of HR at Acme Brick, who will be among the honorees Feb. 16 at the Dallas Business Journal Minority Business Leaders Award luncheon.
Shout out 2: Colonial Country Club, home of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, was rated fifth best tour course in a poll of 80 tour players.
Shout out 3: Gladney Center for Adoption turns 125 this year. Wow!
Shocking news: If you run a business out of your home, can you qualify for commercial electricity rates? Hellloooo? Just asking because Mike Brasovan of THG Energy Solutions, an energy management company that aggregates small businesses together to buy power as if they were one big corporation, helped negotiate a contract that runs from April 2012 to March 2014 and the rate is FOUR cents per kilowatt hour for the first year of the contract.
Have a ball: Congrats to University of Texas-Arlington, which opens its new College Park Center tonight with a free basketball doubleheader. In fact, all basketball games are free the rest of the season.
Film fantastic: GST Manufacturing's Ken Rushing says the diversified company is dominant in one area. It has 80 percent market share worldwide of projection portal windows in movie theaters.
Selling fool: Sandler sales svengali Kim Booker says her franchised taco shop reached break-even in four months.
How is this for a referral? A first-time customer was so happy with Pepper Hudson of Pepper-L Specialties that she asked for a v-card so she could forward it to 18 business friends. |

You rang? If Mr. B is ever as famous as 1-800-DonHelm of Southwest Professional Associates, he wants his Chamber number to be 1-800-paymemo. |
