PICTURE OF THE WEEK!

Business as usual during the recent Business After Hours at TCU Neeley School of Business.  Those Horned Frogs sure know how to host a get-together.

Above L-R: William Brewer (NAI Huff Partners) with wife Anna Brewer and Timothy Hendren (Alliance Office Systems).

Did you hear the one about…A few years back, son NoBGood was driving Mr. B around town, blaring a rap tune and Dad was startled to hear some of the foul “lyrics”. Got Mr. B to wondering if his parents were equally startled in the ’70s to hear comedian George Carlin’s rap. So, it might be a good opportunity to turn the dial and take your kid to hear the Grammy Award-winning comedian, actor and author this Saturday night at Bass Performance Hall. Magnificent Maggie May at the Bass is not joking when she says she has two tickets to give away.

Mooching on MAIN ST: Be one of a cast of thousands when you volunteer to help Main Street Arts Festival and support the Downtown Fort Worth Inc. event April 17-20. Volunteers are needed for guest relations, beverage service, merchandising, and an array of other duties such as artist hosting. It’s fun, and you get an insider’s look at world-class art, food and entertainment ranging from street performers to stars of popular music on the national stage. For more information, e-mail or call 817-336-2787. To make it sweeter, one volunteer will get tickets for two to the vaunted, coveted and award-winning MAIN ST. Skybox presented by Sundance Square for Thursday night’s “Opening Extravaganza,” featuring music by Wayman Tisdale, beverages by Coors and catering by Reata. Could be the best – and only -- seats on the street.

Stars come out at night: That phrase was coined by Irving Berlin to celebrate Mr. B’s dating career, long since extinguished. Fifty years later, it better signifies some of the incredible sights available at The Planetarium at UT-Arlington. We’re going to be (Shelly) Frank with you, this is a fun evening out under the stars and we’ve got passes for four couples to enjoy.

How to succeed in business: The only way to get a seat at tomorrow's Small Business of the Year luncheon at Colonial Country Club is to sit with Mr. B. The finalists:
  • EMERGING BUSINESS
    - Crypto Security Systems, LLC; Riverside Kennel; Teneo Linguistics Co., LLC
  • 1-10 EMPLOYEES
    - Design Works Studio; Technology Team, LLC; Teresa's Treasures
  • 11-50 EMPLOYEES
    - Innovative Developers, Inc.; Rassai Interactive; Worthington National Bank
  • 51-150 EMPLOYEES
    - The Fort Worth Club; SKIHI Enterprises, Ltd.

You don't see Mr. B on the list; in fact, Mr. B has a table in the way, way back and looking for seven seatmates, if you'd like to join him. If he can find seatmates, his table position will improve by at least two rows! Don't enter if you can't go TOMORROW at 11:30.

Who? What? Where? If you grew up in Miami, you were probably one of the few Americans that had heard of Cyprus, but only because of placekicker Garo Yepremian of the Miami Dolphins. If you still are in the dark about Cyprus and care about foreign affairs, you’ll want to attend the World Affairs Council luncheon March 26 at the Petroleum Club. His Excellency Andreas S. Kakouris -- Ambassador of Cyprus to the U.S. -- will speak on Cyprus: The European Union’s Lighthouse in the Eastern Mediterranean and two winners can also meet and greet business leaders. How does this moniker sound? His Excellency…Mr. B.

Rio de fiesta! Artes de la Rosa will have its first fundraiser March 29 at Rose Marine Theater and the theme is a Brazilian Carnival with Mr. B as a featured, Arthur Murray get-them-on-the-floor dancing the salsa and rumba. If you haven’t been to Rio for THE CARNIVAL, this will be a fabulous opportunity to experience A Carnival. If you can salsa, and you can rumba, then this pair of tickets would allow you to parteeeee!

¿Cómo se llama?: Lou De Rosa can speak seven languages, including Portuguese and Italian. But when he starts talking Logix and what it does, it’s all Greek to Mr. B.

Christmas in March: Sherry Green, president of Technology Team, LLC, took advantage of a Christmas gift and drove everyone wild recently at Texas Motor Speedway. “It was awesome,” she said of the 10-laps gift from husband Allen. “I drove the Interstate Battery car number 18. It took once around the track to get the feel and then we were off! They have governed the cars to go about 160 mph. I had it on the floor a lot of the time. Probably the hardest thing was to go across the lanes. It was like playing a video game in that you watch the road so intently. You do not realize how fast you are going because others are going fast, too. It felt really great having all that power in your hands. I already have trouble staying within the speed limit; now it is going to be even harder!” The Chamber’s Day at the Speedway is April 3.

Taxing times: She’s not taxed at all, but Jean Davis, SWTC, has seen her business jump 76.6 percent year over year. By March 1, she already had done more tax returns than all of last year.

New roosting home: The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is erecting a monumental sculpture -- Conjoined by New York-based artist Roxy Paine – on its grounds outside the museum. Conjoined is 40-feet tall by 45-feet wide, and the stainless-steel sculpture is of two trees whose branches “cantilever in space to connect in midair.” We're gonna need signage: NO GRACKLES ALLOWED.

Kudos: The Chamber has been named by the Texas Association of Partners in Education as a Gold Star Award winner for its partnership with the Fort Worth Independent School District. “The relationship between the Fort Worth Chamber and the FWISD is solidly rooted in a deep mutual understanding that together, public education and commerce form the foundation of a vibrant and growing city,” said TAPE.

4 sale: Bethany Tyler of Burnett’s Staffing says she “sells people.” Daughter MisBehavin was on eBay, but we moved the listing to Burnett’s.

Jokes are wild: It’s one thing when the Aggies come to town and it’s one thing when the Hogs come to town, but it’s going to be a crazy four or five things when the Aggies and the Hogs are in town Oct. 3, 2009 for the first college football game at JerryWorld, the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington.

Here’s a title for you: Amanda Hawkins is Director of Selection for Northwestern Mutual. She’s the recruiting ace.

Freese frame it: Judy Burgess of Freese and Nichols has a new “SNAZZY with a capital S”, metallic blue Nissan Altima coupe that has everything on it. “The salesman told me there was no other one in the country like mine,” she said. For safety, she’s parking in the boonies.

A billion reasons: Forbes’ list of billionaires included 29 Texans and Mr. B can’t remember one ever trying to win a Newz-E-Letter giveaway. These are good prizes, too! It appears that six of them have some kind of Kevin Bacon Six Degrees of Separation alignment with the Chamber. If just one were an active member (you go, Teresa Pearson!), the bet is there would be free lunches aplenty and Mr. B would get a raise from his current 39 cents an hour.

Bidding war? AllianceTexas is hosting a job fair April 16 at The Speedway Club at Texas Motor Speedway and one of the jobs open is newsletter writer. Ya think…more than 39 cents an hour? The event is free for job seekers and last year there were 48 AllianceTexas-based companies participating and 1,036 job seekers.

Fast pitch: Speedy recovery to Maggie Withroder, a former City of Fort Worth recreation guru, an Easter Seals North Texas board member and Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Hall of Famer for softball.

A favor for B? Hey, Am-Bass-Adores, when you go ribbon cutting at Ashton Wood Homes next week, could you please ask Lisa (not related to Gertrude) Stein if she would give away that gorgeous model home in Newz-E-Letter?

Eggs-travagant: How come chocolate Easter eggs are 69 cents a dozen, but eggs are about $2 a dozen? Editor #1 answers: Price of feed is up.

Murder, She Wrote: There’s a really cool opportunity March 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 to see Stonegate Mansion when the Women Influencing Business group networks with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and jazz.

Unethical ethics: A Junior Achievement survey found 75 percent of teenagers who claimed they were ready to make ethical decisions. Forty percent said lying, cheating and/or violence are necessary to succeed. You feel comforted now?

Scramblet: Marvin Branch, one of the head pop tops for Coors Distributing Fort Worth, was the owner of Marvin’s Pizza at I-30 and Oakland in the late ’80s. The parlor wasn’t really named after him, but was selected because he would only have to add two letters to the name on the sign already in place—Avanti’s

Coming Up: Big Boss Bill, the Chamber CEO, actually looked down and spoke to Mr. B and said he had to be serious on this one. You see, there's this massive luncheon and Barnett Shale Expo March 28-29 that is very informative and very business oriented that you should consider attending. The luncheon is Friday and the free Expo is Saturday. Go here for more info. An 8-minute promo of Chris Quinn’s CQ Production of The History & Making of the Barnett Shale documentary will  be ready for preview at the Expo.
