Just sayin’, it’s not too late: Have iPods, Bluetooths and cell phones taken away the whimsy of wearing earrings? They have for Mr. B. But when (hey-hey) Rene called from Cash America and said the company was “all in” for its fourth annual Mother’s Day giveaway, we’re willing to drop all of our calls and tunes and adorn our ears with these gorgeous 14-carat, white-gold, stud earrings, weighing approximately ¾ carat. Just in time for Mother’s Day.

Love songs: When the Fort Worth Opera sent over two orchestra level seats for its Bass Performance Hall production of The Elixir of Love, Mr. B's first thought was "Woo Hoo!" His second thought was more ominous, so he called Darren Woods and asked if Darren had permission to sing about Mr. B's elixir love life. Darren said not to worry, that the lead character was Nemorino, so no one will hear about B’s love life. Elixir of Love is part of the FW Opera's triolgy of productions during its Festival; the others are Don Giovanni and the world premiere of Before Night Falls.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

David Bonderman, founding partner of TPG, spoke to Linda Pavlik, Pavlik and Associates, about the Russian economy last week after his remarks at the Leaders in Business breakfast held at the Fort Worth Club. TPG generally makes significant investments in operating companies through acquisitions and restructurings across a broad range of industries throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Shark Tank: Calling PR peeps, accountants, bankers, IP attorneys, commercial real estate folks and the like. The TECH Fort Worth IMPACT Awards are next Wednesday and plenty of startup and emerging business will be at TCU for the luncheon. The speaker is Waste Management’s Undercover Boss Larry O’Donnell; you can’t get tickets by offering to clean up because WM does it better. Mr. B took out the trash at TECH Fort Worth and scored four seats.

Lean, mean and green: Last year, the Crowne Plaza Colonial Invitational was a pink out, honoring defending champion Phil Mickelson’s absence because of wife Amy’s battle with breast cancer. This year, it’s green, as in Master’s champion Phil Mickelson and a $6.2 million purse. Phil and 2009 champion Steve Stricker are hungry to beat the field May 24-30 and we know there’s someone out there that could use two grounds passes and the official tournament cap.

Toni, tone, toney: Just when Mr. B finally decided to splurge for some cargo shorts, the Star-Telegram runs a fashion feech that cargo is out and flat fronts are in. Yikes! Not wanting to be totally out of the (belt) loop for summer, B headed over to the chic Toni & Guy Hairdressing at West 7th and favorite cut-up Danae scissored B with the latest hairstyle AND a makeup treatment. Adam Lambert, here we come. You could get the Danae haircut and (non-iPhone) makeup app, too.

Hair-raising: Jason Adams, he of Hahnfeld, Hoffer Stanford and with a bald pate, is a Facebook fan of Men’s Direct Luxury Grooming Products. Go figure.

Don’t mess with Texas: Christina Judge of CASA was telling friends she’s proud of the husky male jogger trying to shed some unwanted pounds on her drive to work, but asks, “Will you please wear a shirt???? PLEASE????”

A handle on this: Glad to see Fort Worth Lap-Band is a new member. Pools are open and Mr. B's world-famous love handles need some attention. Am-Bass-Adorables will be lapping things up there during a June 10 ribbon cutting.

Beer, here! Dave Berzina and Melonye Whitson of the Chamber, Ed Riefenstahl (representing TCU) and Darlene Ryan of TECH Fort Worth are going to Hannover, Germany next month to talk with economic development officials and companies about doing business in Fort Worth or with Fort Worth companies. The impetus for this comes via Ulrich Hartmann, a new Chamber member, who was an exchange student at TCU in the early ’80s and got his B.A. and MBA at TCU.  He lives in Hannover and wanted to get Hannover companies interested in doing business in Fort Worth.

Terror in our midst: Just off cataract surgery, Mr. B's vision still is in recovery mode. And the eyes saw waterboarding and the brain got scared. Fortunately, the editor saw it as wakeboard and now we're all thrilled. A wakeboard facility is going in the floodway near downtown along the Trinity River, according to the TRVA; it's one of only seven similar parks in the nation. Plans are for events, tournaments and competitions at the facility.

Digital takeover: In 1994, a digital camera’s resolution was just 25 percent of film’s. Now, it’s 50 percent greater than film. Everybody can be a photojournalist.

Hibernation over: Cat-napping is no longer allowed! The Fort Worth Cats minor-league baseball team opens play May 13 against Shreveport-Bossier and you can see the team working out this week and next at LaGrave Field. If one prospect looks a bit ancient, he is. It’s radio deejay Jody Dean; the station is one of the team’s sponsors.

Young punks: Feeling old when you reference using a typewriter in your first job? Fort Worth Business Press Editor Bob Francis swears he’ll tell no typewriter jokes May 27 during the publication’s 40-Under-40 event, which honors Tarrant County’s best under 40. “I don’t want a sea of blank faces staring back at me,” he said.

Writing to Emily Post: Mr. B is a bit old for a bib, so is it proper, or even just OK, etiquette to tuck a tie into the shirt while eating?

Armed and able: Props to the staff at the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl. It truly is committed to year-long military support and not just a football game. The staff is organizing a May 15 DFW International Airport welcome home for the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Here’s a job, Bob: Here’s a freebie you don’t have to win. Employers can get free registration and booth for the June 10 Hiring Fair 2010 by contacting Lila Boydston at (817) 871-3116 or Lila@esc11.net before May 20. It runs from 1-4 p.m. at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Partners for Hiring Fair 2010 are the Fort Worth Chamber, Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber, Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, Jobing Foundation and Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County. About 800 job seekers are expected.

How lucky we are: Just another reminder of our good fortune -- Sundance Square has been selected one of 10 outstanding developments in the Urban Land Institute's Awards for Excellence: The Americas competition. The ULI awards honor better land use and development.

Prosperous New Year: Big Boss Bill has attended every one of the Chamber's 127 Annual Meetings and he'll be at No. 128 June 8th to hear money mogul Jeffrey Garten, who served on the White House economic policy staffs of Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter and had a 10-year tenure as dean of the Yale School of Management. His topic is The Intersection of Wall Street and Washington, which Mr. B couldn't find on Google Maps. Spirit of Enterprise winner will be announced, and if you don't let it out of the bag, Mr. B will tell you it is D/FW International Airport. The Dannon Company is the fat-free presenting sponsor for the luncheon at the Worthington Hotel. XTO Energy is back again as entertainment sponsor.

Cooking with mom: Fort Worth, Texas magazine is trying to determine the Top Chef in the area by September. In honor of Mother's Day, Mr. B nominated MomB, who makes an incredible crab and lobster dip and a Kentucky Derby pie that would win by 31 lengths. Unfortunately, MomB lives in Miami and was disqualified. Maybe your mom lives here? Oh, and happy day to all the mothers out there.

Two more years, two more years: Not as good as a Nixon Presidential nomination chant, but Mr. B is signed on to Newz-E-Letter for two more years, with a raise to $.375. Yes, the economy is improving. Thank you for allowing us into your mailboxes.
