Fair (playing) field: David Moran, the general manager of the Fairfield Inn on S. University Drive, wants to showcase his renovated guest rooms, pool & Jacuzzi, and exercise room. So he’s offering a Friday and Saturday night stay (May 29 & 30). “If you were a real man and really worked it,” David told Mr. B, “you’d get some Colonial tickets to add to the package.” Peter Ripa, tournament director for that weekend’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial tournament, gladly obliged. So, the winner has a room Friday night, the tournament Saturday and a room Saturday night. Your weekend also includes free breakfasts and use of the exercise room and pool/Jacuzzi.
Plaaaaay balllll! Ahhh, the familiar cry at the ol’ ball yard. But what if you could scurry about your own backyard BBQ offering Mr. B and your friends another familiar and even-more-friendly cry: BEER HERE! Coors kingpin Larry Anfin wants your Memorial Day to be extra special, so three winners each will win a case of Coors Light Longnecks AND a case of Samuel Adams Boston Lager Longnecks.
Coveting these: I’ll walk, but you could run to Billy Bob’s Texas May 29 to hear American Idol swooner/crooner Bucky Covington. You don’t have to win Idol to make it big because Bucky’s self-titled debut was #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums (they make albums still?) and produced three hit singles: A Different World, It's Good to Be Us and I'll Walk. Thanks to Princess Pam at BBT, five of you couples will stroll right in.

Charged up: Lupe Zamora of Zamora Electric has received rave reviews from Chamber members. So Mr. B was more than a little jolted when this offer for one hour of labor came in. That ceiling fan or HD television can be installed professionally and you won’t be shocked by the price.
Leading us where? The Tuesday Leads Group that meets at Ronald McDonald House charges $10 for a catered lunch, which is actually less than $10. The overage at the end of the first quarter was more than $400, which was donated to Ronald McDonald House. The Monday all-women Leads Group voted to meet from 4-5:30 p.m. at Buttons. No group has ever met during Happy Hours. (Well, not officially.)

Strike up the band: Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse underwrote yesterday’s annual awards luncheon for the Children’s Education Program at Bass Performance Hall. The luncheon celebrated 11 years of specially prepared programs for 70,000 children—all provided free. Several musicians involved in education also were honored.

Just wondering: Corn oil is made from corn. Vegetable oil is made from vegetables. Olive oil is made from olives. What is baby oil made from?
Dog-gonest thing: Ever since daughter MisBehavin’ slinked off to California with dog Guy Richie in tow, Mr. B has been lonely. Missin’ the dog, not the daughter. Then Emma, Red Cross Chisholm Trail mascot and Alison Pino dog, entered Mr. B’s life and with it, slobbery kisses and yucky breath…the dog, not Alison. So we’re hurrying over to see Teresa Hanson at the Vetoquinol USA ribbon cutting May 15 to pick up some breath-fresh Dentahex Oral Care Chews. Chamber ribbon cutting and event photos can be viewed online.
This little piggy…: During the swine flu scare, Balcom Agency’s ad superstar Lynne Swihart changed her name to Lynne Swinehart.
And the winner is…: Mr. B was searching the Fort Worth Texas magazine categories for “Best Of…” and didn’t see best newsletter or best fictitious character. What’s up with that, newlywed Hal Brown? The “Best Of” party is June 12th at Casa Mañana and benefits Panther Club and the Boys & Girls Club.

Just golden: Bill Meadows, THE hub at Hub International and Mr. Transportation around the state, will receive the prestigious Golden Deeds award from the Exchange Club May 26th.
P.S., from moms: Some poignant and some funny lines from last week’s Hats Off to Mothers luncheon presented by Easter Seals North Texas. Honoree D’Ann Bonnell said if you have more than one child, “don’t compare them…they hate that. And don’t make decisions for them; you’ll be wrong.” She also said that son Jon, a former science teacher and now chef, taught her “about being cheerful.” Honoree Shari Hardin was thanking two friends and said, “they know too much about me to not be my friends.”
Tilt in your favor: Ever wish you could get in to see the top dog? Tomorrow’s North Area Council luncheon is at the Bell Helicopter facility at Alliance and President & CEO Richard Millman will speak, answer questions and hand out jobs to vendors. Well, maybe not the last part. Bell, the second-largest manufacturer in Tarrant County, has 11,000 employees worldwide and sponsors the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.
Speaking of…: The Armed Forces Bowl already has an agreement with Navy to play in the 2013 game. Yes, 2013. Just goes to show that having a military-affiliated school is more important than any other factor. Navy has been a winner this decade, but 2013? The 2009 game has a primo New Year’s Eve television slot.
Wishes for Wendy: Forgot to mention Sen. Wendy Davis’ May 16 birthday last year and she sent her dog Moots after Mr. B. Sooooooo, happy birthday to Wendy, the fashionista cover girl.
Good ol’ days: Still reminisce about NBC-5 wonder weatherman Harold Taft? His granddaughter Rachel is a Rally Cat and will be in the crowd during this weekend’s opening series for the Fort Worth Cats.

Smart choice: With all the dire/hopeful economic predictions and confusing numbers out there, Tarrant County College spring graduates are fortunate to hear accountant Robert Fernandez’ keynote address.
Next generation: Huckabee & Associates, a one-time Chamber small business of the year, has funded a Tarleton University research lab that will assist Texas public schools with various aspects of facility planning, construction and management.
Enterprising: At the Chamber’s annual meeting luncheon June 9, Gideon Toal will be awarded the Spirit of Enterprise. Gideon Toal has its name linked to nearly as many buildings in town as Amon Carter.

Practice doesn’t always make perfect: Jim Dickinson of Frost Insurance has been playing golf for 30 years and his handicap never has changed.
Kookoff King: After four more top finishes, Carl “Chez Bubba” Lamb of Sand Trap Services (grease pits) is on the brink of qualifying for the world-famous Chili Cookoff in Terlingua Nov. 3.
