Hail to Hawk: Stacey Magovern, George's son, is the manager of wireless B2B sales for PCI, which does business as Hawk Electronics. His sales team comes to you and helps with all your cellular needs, including analyzing the impossible - to - read bills. Stacey came to Mr. B and accidentally left behind a Blackberry Curve 8310. If you don't tell, we'll ring it up as his loss and a Newz - E - Letter reader's gain. This phone has it all - - Blackberry email (with spell - checker), text and picture messaging, PIM organizer, mobile Instant Messaging, 2.0 mega - pixel camera with flash and 5x digital zoom, integrated speakerphone, conference calling, expansion card slot to add up to 4 GB memory and global voice and data roaming in more than 135 countries. All the winner has to do is pay activation fees.
Bested once again: "I am humbled today to receive this Best of Fort Worth award from Fort Worth, Texas magazine for best Chamber newsletter in Tarrant County..." Not to be in 2008, we guess, because no you - are - the - winner word yet from Hal Brown and FW Texas staff (or no category). And no invite to celebrate the June issue of the magazine's Best Of Everything in Fort Worth. The celebration party – benefiting Panther Boys and Girls Club - - is May 29 at 1100 S. Henderson and you and a date/spouse can go even if Mr. B won't be there. You'll have valet parking and full access to two bands, heavy hors d'oeuvres by multiple Best Of restaurant winners and an open bar.

Lemons to lemonade: You read here last month that Larry Anfin and Coors Distributing Company of Fort Worth were honored by the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Well, Larry can't stop helping the less fortunate, and this week, it could be you. Coors distributes Mike's Hard Lemonade in this area, and Larry wants three readers to get a taste ... by the case. He's giving away one case of Mike's Hard Pomegranate Lemonade; one case of Mike's Premium Malt Cocktails Mojito and one case of Mike's Premium Malt Cocktails Pomegranate Martini. Don't tell TABC, and drink responsibly, of course, especially by the case.
Class act: The Fort Worth Business Press has a new publisher, Banks Dishmon, and he's already giving back to the community. Sales wunderkind Mary Schlegel made a sales pitch to the boss and wrangled four tickets to the Score a Goal in the Classroom benefit concert this Saturday at the Back Forty in the Stockyards. The featured entertainment is Professor D and the Playskool; you would think a band playing to benefit classroom excellence would learn how to spell Playskool.
Round and round we go: If you have a website, you may be global and not know it. The Internet takes you everywhere The T doesn't and everywhere comes to you. So maybe you should be attending the Mayor's Global Awards Luncheon May 28th at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Guess here is that 3M - Mayor Mike Moncrief - might be in attendance. He might even speak. If you want to go on the Chamber's dime, Mary Weaver copped three tickets for B to give away.
Mayoral? Wonder if 3M and wife Rosie have attended a Chamber ribbon cutting? If not, they may make May 22 when the big scissors make an appearance at Sendera Title, 2936 W. 7th St., whose president is Troy Moncrief.
| Whippersnappers: Mr. B received a request from those Chamber YPs, Brianna and Lauren with Vision Fort Worth, and they bluntly mentioned that he didn't need to respond...could be age discrimination. However, most of you are young - minded and can respond at the Vision FW Forum under the "Lounge" VFW wants to know what you do and where you do it. Well, not everything, of course, but those other things...like the best places in Fort Worth for young professionals to live, work and play. Offer up your suggestions and read other responses by clicking here to go to the "Lounge" area of VFW's forum. If you were wondering, Mr. B frequents those restaurants that offer the before - 5 early - bird specials.

We've got Spirit, so does...! Cheers to Lockheed Martin, which has won the Chamber's Spirit of Enterprise Award and will be saluted during the Chamber's 126th Annual Meeting June 12 at the Renaissance Worthington. Tickets are available - better move on this all you Lockheed vendors - by contacting the Chamber. General Peter Pace, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the featured speaker.
We're No. 1: Next time you line dance on over to Billy Bob's Texas, just know that you'll be partying in the country's Nightclub of the Year, according to the 2008 Academy of Country Music Awards. Princess Pam and BB'sT have won three times in 27 years.
Fit to be tied: Mr. B was looking to enhance his musculature and improve his cardio, so GM Teresa Anderson says the City Club Fitness Center is undergoing major improvements with equipment and programs. |
 |
Kudos: The Chamber's East Area Council recently held a math & science camp for its adopted school, Meadowbrook Middle School. Tried to get daughter MisBehavin enrolled, but she couldn't pass the math portion of the entrance exam. Click here for pictures.
Gifting: Employees of Easter Seals North Texas contributed the first $1,000 toward a new building as a birthday gift for CEO and President Monica Prather. |
 |
Did you know? Mr. B was surprised to learn that The T owns the lobby of the Texas & Pacific building? Just the lobby.
Calling card: AT&T has been busy. Since May 1, qualifying AT&T customers are able to connect to the Internet for free at more than 7,000 Wi - Fi enabled company - operated Starbucks locations. And the company is pushing its 2008 philanthropic focus, which is on education and workforce readiness through an initiative that addresses the high school dropout rate.
Baby Fancy Pants: Many of you remember the checkered pants of EdwardJones financial planner Jake Richter from last year's Chamber's golf tourney. Well, Jake and wife Breinn are expecting their first child and Jake has matching pants already ordered. If that weren't enough excitement, Jake's twin brother Kurt and his wife Tiffany are expecting twins. BTW, Breinn is finishing her MBA from TCU.
Kreskin - ed: Former Fort Worth Star Telegram publisher Wes Turner has a new gig - Advance Newspapers, which print what happened before it happens. Looking into Mr. B's crystal ball, it's a good chance Turner will become chairman of the Chamber in spring of '09.
Writing gem: If you ever wondered what goes on to get ready to play one professional baseball game, you've got to read Fort Worth Cats President John Dittrich's May 11 blog at the Cats' website. Incredible detail; Mr. B thought son NoBGood was just lying about actually working.
A birdie told me: During the Crowne Plaza Invitation at Colonial, local chairities benefit from the tour's Birdies for Charity program. Last year, $1.96 million was raised and awarded locally. This year's tournament is the 62nd at Colonial, the longest running PGA tournament at one venue.
Spillover effect: Chamber giant Dugan, who knows her way around wines, says Park Place Motor Cars Fort Worth does not allow red wine to be served during receptions there because a spill might damage a car's exterior. Not so for Pinots, Rieslings, etc...
Carry me away: Mr. B is fascinated meeting Chamber member businesses that are hidden jewels. Beau DeArmon is an account executive with CEVA Freight, a big - package, cargo transport company in Grapevine. It's moving to a 400,000 - square - foot facility this month, has 100 offices in the U.S. and 1,000 globally. Clients include DynCorp, Lockheed Martin, RadioShack and Pier 1 Imports. You probably knew all that. |
 |
No AXA to grind: Financial guru Richard Baughman has joined AXA Advisors.
Leads Group changes: After 7 - plus years, George Fassett of ThumbTechs has passed his Leads Group networking gavel to Don Marable of EdwardJones. And Hal Dodd has dropped his Leads Group leadership and his fishing guide business to concentrate on his expanding Paychex business.
Say cheese: Those wonderful new photos on the Chamber home page are by Chamber staffer and Mr. B Fav Five Beverly Rozanski, Newz - E - Letter's prize princess. She started taking pictures at 12, about six years ago, with a little Instamatic she had received for Christmas and has been hooked since. She says when you take 600 photos in one outing that you're bound to come back with one or two nice ones.
