Medium rare, please: Greg Kalina, the dapper and debonair proprietor at Del Frisco's, saw Mr. B’s measly raise to $.375 from boss Miserly Mistress and sent over a dinner for two certificate “because there’s no other way you could afford to eat here.” B invited assistant Fort Worth City Manager Tom Higgins so he could discuss with him how they both could learn to live on a budget. After a sumptuous ribeye dinner washed down with incredible Del’s Delights, Tom arranged for his fire guys to arrive and clear the place “just in case.” We were able to leave without using the certificate, and voila, you, a guest and your stomachs can enjoy the finest of fare this week.

Not admitted without shirt: OK, so the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial is pro-amming it today and the real stuff begins tomorrow. We’re talking fashion, not golf. And while spectators are decked out in shorts, tanks and flip flops, you, too, will want to be noticed. You want to make an impression. And you will be if you wear your new shirt and tie from Jos. A. Bank at University Plaza. In fact, you’ll probably have time to run in and shop while you’re stuck in traffic on University. Warning, don’t drink and drive; the shirt is water resistant, but the tie isn’t.

The ever-droll Lance Barrow, CBS Sports producer, interviewed PGA Tour golfer and Fort Worth resident J.J. Henry at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Preview luncheon last week. Henry, a TCU graduate, says he’s looking forward to winning the Colonial “one of these years.”  Will it be this year? See other golf fans in our Photo Gallery.

Fighting grime: Noticed that Jerry Miller’s Facebook picture appeared a little out of focus, maybe partly cloudy, similar to the thin layer of grime on Mr. B’s Pacer (traded the Neon). Suggested Jerry run that photo by Glen Ellman Photography or maybe even run it through his Cityview Car Wash & Oil Change. Summer is almost here and you probably have been toning that bod for swimsuit season. Have you neglected your car’s body? Then get one of these gift cards for $25 at Cityview.

Cowboy Up: There is a proliferation (Mr. B had a back-to-FSU moment there) of young professionals groups and they carouse and network, then carouse some more, then volunteer, then cap it off with some carousing. What’s not to like? Especially carousing about the wonderfully, always free Amon Carter Museum. Ms. Membership, Mary Lynn Sloane, is offering up a one-year, dual membership in The Gallery, the Amon Carter's young professionals group.

Oy vey: Word is that it is GREAT to be a grandparent, but Mr. B figures it’s worth the wait. Gramps Doug Will of Willco Training and Consulting just got three times the fun…triplets. Congrats?

Apples & anchovies? Glenda Diaz, owner of two Edible Arrangements, didn’t have enough to do so she bought the pizza restaurant in the same strip center as her Hulen fruit fantastics.

Wash your mouth out…: During a recent fundraiser luncheon for Easter Seals North Texas, there was a beautiful tiny box at each setting. Mr. B brought his home for an after-dinner treat. He opened it, unwrapped it and admired the white chocolate. He took a bite. “Hmmm, was that a lavender smell? What is this?” Got out the reading glasses. Tiny type described the luscious scents in the … soap. Yuk!

Expressive: Couple of clever readers from last week’s American Express $50 gift card giveaway from Meridian Bank. From Ambra Cole at Express Employment Professionals: “I’m an American who works at Express – OMEN!” From Susan Nix at Warren Douglas: “I am an American and have the ability to Express myself.”

Family Ties: And on the Hyatt Place-Stockyards Hotel giveaway, Amanda Martin of BBVA Compass wrote: "One of these days, I'm gonna win one of these hotel stays. And then I can finally invite the parents for a visit.”

Tie dyed: Paisley Irwin of PrimeLending says her Dad named her. “My parents were going with a “P” theme.  My dad is Patrick and my older brother is Preston. Many people assume my parents were hippies, but not so. They just liked it as a name. My Dad does own a large collection of paisley ties; it was my standard Father’s Day gift.  I didn’t like my name growing up, but I love it now. It’s a great conversation starter with people from Scotland."

Inside the ropes: Comerica banker J.R. Holland, a former golf professional at Colonial CC, is a walking PGA Ambassador during today’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial pro-am tourney.

Just another hole-in-one: John Sammons Jr., hubby to Lena Pope Home’s diva for dollars Marilyn Sammons, aced the 215-yard 14th hole at Vaquero during the Byron Nelson pro-am. It was his third hole-in-one; Dallas Mavericks radio announcer Chuck Cooperstein was a witness.

Our golf preview: You, too, can be a trivia expert while at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Here’s how:

  • Caterer to the stars, Julie Brauer, says Colonial will host at least 25 banquets this week.
  • At 64 years, Colonial is No. 1 for hosting a tournament continuously.
  • The $5.1 million the Crowne Plaza Colonial donated to local charities last year ranked No. 3 on the PGA Tour.
  • Colleen, Mike and Stu of the Marriott masterpieces on University Drive say golfers do not share rooms with fellow golfers and show their confidence by reserving rooms through next Monday.
  • CBS has 350 people in its crew taking rooms around town.
  • Along the 10th fairway is the Henry House Hideaway, a corporate skybox for kids and sponsored by former TCU golfer J.J. Henry’s foundation. Last week, J.J. and the foundation handed over a $100,000 check for First Tee of Fort Worth to help construct the Ben Hogan Learning Center.

Money-saving tip: The wastewater portion of your water bill in Fort Worth is determined by usage in December, January & February. You might want to shower less and flush less those months and save dollars the rest of the year.

Round & round we go: In a male-dominated field, Terry Ellis is doing things differently. The Director of Marketing for Car Concepts proclaims herself Terry the Tire Girl and burns rubber boasting about the employee-owned company, the No. 1 independent tire seller in D/FW.

Breathe by design: Jerome Washington was explaining how S.T.A.R. CPR is working with the American Heart Association to get everybody trained in CPR. S.T.A.R. does training 24/7. Really? With coffee at 8 a.m. and beer and wine at 3 a.m.? “Not quite,” said Jerome, “but donuts all the time.”

Name game: Between you and me (or I, or us, spellcheck is no help) the Chamber’s annual meeting June 8 is at the Worthington. But for you peeps who are precise, press release says officially it’s THE WORTHINGTON RENAISSANCE FORT WORTH HOTEL (its name, its caps).

Do you know me? Seems that most of us don’t realize that the no-signage, artsy-looking city parking garage next to the Omni Hotel is a parking garage. Usage is about 10 cars a day. Marketing plans are being discussed that include lower rates and more Molly the Trolley.

It’s 5 o’clock Friday somewhere: Don’t know if it’s original, but love this line from fashionista Stacie Poyner at Dean Kingston: “Monday is so far away from Friday, and Friday is so bloody close to Monday.”
