Labored attempt: Daughter MisBehavin' gets married on the expensive beach of Malibu this weekend and the expensive reception hall allows you to bring your food and drinks. After renting expensive tuxedos for two and buying expensive flights for five, Mr. B decided to try and save what's left of his bank account and called Coors Distributing Fort Worth boss Larry Anfin to see if any of the July 4 giveaway winners didn't pick up their nine cases of beer to stock the bar Saturday. “They did...like the next hour,” Larry said. “And don't ask, because we don't donate for weddings.” OK, Larry, I got it. How about Labor Day? “Labor Day we do big time.” Larry big-timed it for three winners, who each will receive one case of Coors Light cans, one case of Blue Moon Summer Seasonal cans and one case of Mike's Hard Lemonade cans.

Boys will be boys: This is a great event because a portion of the proceeds benefit educational programs of the Chamber and goodness knows Mr. B and others, who shall remain nameless but whose initials are BBB and MM, need it. Fort Worth, Texas magazine is presenting Dick & Jerry Van Dyke, who always are sunny side up, in Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys Sept. 10 at Casa Manana. Yung'un Hal Brown had to Google Van Dykes to make sure they weren't just goatees before agreeing to produce, then agreed to produce two tickets for a Newz-E-Letter reader.

Picture of the Week

So longs, farewells, auf wiedersehens, and goodbyes were given to Fort Worth ISD's former Superintendent Melody Johnson (right) last week at an appreciation luncheon at the Colonial Country Club. Attendees included Senator Wendy Davis (left) and retiring FWISD Executive Director of Parent and Public Engagement Nancy Ricker (middle). View more photos here.

Pole dance: You either are vacationing for a cool breeze and can't care for your plants or it is just too hot to care for your plants. Thanks to Haltom City's GST Manufacturing, your problem is solved with the GST Rainmaker Watering Shepherd's Pole, which automatically waters your elevated hanging basket plant when connected to a sprinkler system or outside water faucet. It's about Dirk Nowitzki's height with a 20-foot water line. Sales sprinkler Ken will be Rushing two poles to one winner.

What are you doing Saturday? How about a night in with chips and we're not talking Ponch & Jon, the California motorcycle cops. This is a night for tortilla chips with some award-winning salsa packs from Renfro Foods. Add a favorite bottle from WineStyles and some video on demand from Charter and it's a Mr. B kind of date night. If you didn't know, Renfro's Pineapple Salsa recently was named a Best Savory Snack in Fitness magazine's 5th annual Healthy Food Awards.

Getting adjusted to life: This is what you call preventative care -- World of Wellness founder/chiropractor Dr. Kris Meyer adjusted his kids the day they were born.

Ape with a cape: Graphic designer Les Hicks named his company Flying Gorilla Studio. Says “we are a small design shop with big hairy ideas that fly.”

Dating 101...not! The Business Press' Monica Balbo recalls a “dinner and a movie” date. “We went to the Movie Tavern for ‘dinner' and the movie. It was No Strings Attached.” Needless to say, it was a one-and-done date.

Dating 101...for the laughs: Lucky Strike's Dani Chambers says her worst date was a water skiing adventure. Her date couldn't swim.

Already No. 1: In less than three weeks, TCU football and America's best college head coach take the field against Baylor. That's according to ESPN The Magazine, which polled 55 head and assistant coaches. Frogger Gary Patterson received 23.1 percent of the votes. Alabama's Nick Saban was second at 19.4 percent.

Ding dong: Mr. B asked Areian Ami Kouros what he did for Bell Helicopter. "I am the propulsion systems lead on the 609 program." Cleared that right up.

Schooled on success: Haynes & Boone partner Brian Barnard delivered the accolades during last week's Melody Johnson Appreciation Lunch and for all we know, he still could be talking about the former FWISD Super's loooong list of accomplishments. How long? Lunch turned into happy hour. For her part, Johnson said, “It is I who should be honoring you.”

Being socially correct: Not sure if it were Paul, Michael or Ronald McDonald who said it, but the quote “Our head of social media is the customer” sure is accurate. Shawn Yujuico of CloudNine Communications used it to open her breakfast talk last week. She also suggested that your business assign a champion to manage your social media activities and to have a long-term plan and not just a single, one-shot wonder promotion.

Pick me, pick me: Mr. B got a 5.4 percent raise during 2010, from 37 to 39 cents and figures that has got to qualify for a top business award or maybe a spot as a negotiator for Priceline.com. William Shatner has a better sidekick than Mr. B, so maybe entering for one of the Fort Worth Chamber's Small Business of the Year Awards might be a better idea. If you want to compete against B's success, and you are a for-profit business headquartered in Tarrant County with 1-150 employees, you are eligible. For more information, go here. Nominations are due September 30.

Put a fork in it: She's done! Woohoo! Chamber Go Center Coordinator Glenn Spoons completed a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies at the UT-Arlington Fort Worth Center. Her focus was sustainability and nearly-fired Mr. B has an appointment tomorrow to discuss sustaining this job.

Ya'll come back: In recent months, visiting conventioneers have done landscaping work at Samaritan House and donated $50k to the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Can this be a Groupon? If you have to be there, you might as well eat because chef Kelly Cook and Sam Samuels, director of nutrition services at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth, earned second place in the American Culinary Federation's 2011 National Championship: Cooking for Life.

Pie High-Fives: The prospective Ms. and Mr. B love them some coconut pie at Ridglea Country Club. When they learned Mr. Ace of Cakes featured performer Mike Smith (Paris Coffee Shop) was a Ridglea member, they were sure it was his pie. They were wrong. The Bs want to stage and judge a potential pie-off.

Cooking up new talent: Former foodie David Rotman has joined Frank Kent Motor Co. to launch a management training program.

Boomerang: Not as great as the greatness of its table tennis teams, but Texas Wesleyan ping-ponged John Veilleux back to campus. He had been director of marketing and communications for the law school before heading to Pennsylvania. Now he is back as VP of that area for the entire university and reunited with former Law School dean and current President Fred Slabach.

Some like it hot: Candace Blair, CPA with Sanford, Baumeister & Frazier, was born in 1980, the year with the longest streak of 100-degree days. Her first child is due this week, the year with the second longest streak of 100-degree days. Asked in mid-August what was most uncomfortable -the weather, dragging herself to work or the last two weeks of pregnancy - she answered...work.

Running with scissors: Am-Bass-Adorables will be north, west and south the next three days, cutting up while screaming for ice cream at Blue Bell Creameries at 9525 Harmon Road today, visiting Melissa Nickelson, a personal life coach at 5201 W. Freeway Thursday, and motoring to Firestone Complete Auto Care at 5450 Overton Ridge Blvd. Friday. Ribbon cutting and Chamber event photos can be seen here.

Six feet under: Mr. B's unsuccessful salary negotiations with boss Miserly Mistress leave him little to spend and had him thinking of his tombstone: Too cheap to see a doctor.
