Holidays, southern style: It is official, fall tidings are here, the Christmas tree is up and it’s the holiday season. Now, it’s time to start thinking about – putting away the tree and lights? Just kidding – those special holiday dishes for those special unwanted holiday guests. Let Renaissance Worthington chef James Morris and Food & Beverage Director Robbie Tawil treat you to their holiday cooking school Sept. 24. From 3-5 p.m., five Worthington "kitchen kadets" will get a first-hand lesson on some special holiday treats. At 5, your special dinner guest will meet you as part of a dinner for 10 at Vidalia’s southern kitchen restaurant.

Not just any spectator: There were more than 200 entries for the TCU football pre-game sideline passes and tickets to the Texas State game. That rivals a restaurant giveaway to Del Frisco’s or Grace, Silver Fox, The Covey or Eddie V’s. So we zigged and we zagged a la LT, did a reverse past Coach Patterson and ended up begging ticket guru Scott Kull for an encore performance. No delay of game on his call. It’s goooooooooood! We have two pre-game sideline passes for the Oct. 3 game against SMU and two premium seats for the game.

You could hear a pin drop: Chamber prez Bill Thornton is like a Big Brother to Mr. B. Big Boss B says, “Mr. B do this, Mr. B do that.” Always ordering younger B around. But it’s nice having a big brother, or a big sister. And it is extra nice having Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tarrant County, which coordinates mentors, friends and activities for volunteers to work with children in need of someone special. BBBS is having its Bowl for Kids Sake bowlathon fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 26 and we’ve got a team of five to give away, courtesy of Kelly Imig. If you win, you play and participate for free, or you could play and collect donations, too. Either way, you’ll have a striking good time.

Drive for you: Mr. B wanted to deliver transient son NoBGood to another house, any house but the B Mansion. He called Will Adley at Adley Transportation, who delivers anywhere in the Metroplex and beyond...as a courier or as a trucker. Low, low fees, especially for anything up to 200 pounds. And free warehousing, if necessary. NoBGood is 187 pounds, so Will came and got him and is storing him. He will deliver him when we can find a better home for him to live. Will’s got three Metroplex deliveries for us to give away, and NoBGood, too.

Sous-y pig: Café Modern chef/wit Dena Pederson says she’s working on her “Porkfolio”.

Halloween preview: This is scary fun…the Texas Rangers are selling playoff tickets.

In the deep end: If two-thirds of the earth is water, why is waterfront property so expensive?

Texas, My Texas: Cullen/Frost CEO Dick Evans is a true Texan. And his bank is only about Texas. “I’ve been asked ‘Why don’t you go (expand) into Oklahoma,’” he said at a breakfast sponsored by the TCU Neeley School of Business. “”I always ask, ‘Have you been to Oklahoma?’” Some other Evans editorials:

  • “I don’t mind competing against government banks. They’ll be so bureaucratic. Bring ’em on.”
  • “Fort Worth is our No. 1 loan market.”
  • “If (government) enforces laws we already have, we don’t need any more (laws).”
  • On the recession: “Just because Texas was the last in doesn’t mean we’ll be the last out. (Frost) is marketing and selling harder now than ever and new business is up 141 percent.”

What woes? Our hometown National Cutting Horse Association has a corporate partnership with Sentient Jet, its “Official Private Jet Provider," and Trefethen Family Vineyards, which makes the “Official” wines of the NCHA. Borden is the new sponsor of the NCHA Futurity in November.

Was he a drip? Toni Cryer owns Ace Plumbing. Says she went to buy a shower head for her house and “didn’t know what the heck she was doing. And why were they so expensive?” So chauvinist Mr. B asked if her if her husband works the business with her. Dawn Brace, Navis Pack & Ship, interjected: “Nah, she flushed him about four years ago.”

Lobbying: When Pier 1 Imports built its magnificent facility on the Trinity River, the expansive lobby was spartan, showing off the marble, stone and windows. After Chesapeake Energy bought the building, it tastefully added Pier 1 furniture throughout the lobby.

Star for all seasons: Chamber-ite Carole Ann Fleming played clarinet in the band as a Plainview High freshman and was captain of her P.E. basketball team. The team was called Grady’s Goonies, Grady being her maiden name.

No dissing from dishes: Andrew Bettle is in his 12th year with Lena Pope Home, the last seven or eight in Education Services. He even chips in by washing dishes at LPH’s charter school. “Best thing about doing dishes,” he said, “is they never talk back.”

It’s in the text: Congress has a work opportunity tax credit targeted toward “unemployed veterans” and “disconnected youth,” according to AuldridgeGriffin CPA Mike Dunlap.

Related to Octomom? The symbol on the "pound" key (#) is called an octothorpe.

Parking game: Star-Telegram sports comedian David Thomas points out that those of you driving to the Dallas Cowboys game and parking at Six Flags are putting money in the pocket of Washington Redskins owner Danny Snyder. He’s a major stockholder in Six Flags Inc.

Streetscapes: Downtown Fort Worth Inc. is taking suggestions to make Third Street an even more “exciting pedestrian walkway.” Why not combine it with Ninth Street and make one heckuva street?

Air Dunaway: New member Epic Helicopters definitely will take to the air for your local touring pleasure, but what it really wants is business travelers from Fort Worth to … let’s say McKinney or Plano. Owner is Brian Dunaway.

Left-brain thinking: 'Stewardesses' is the longest English word that is typed with only the left hand.

To booth or not to booth: So, you're wondering whether to get a booth at the Chamber's Trade Show October 29. Consider these numbers and may we suggest a sponsorship, which comes with a booth and many other benefits...

  • Cost per lead from trade show averages $212.
  • Cost per lead from field averages $308.
  • Cost per sale from trade show averages $705.
  • Cost per sale from the field averages $1140.
