Service to smile about: Greatness abounds in many ways, especially at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse. A recent winner of a giveaway for two meals at Del Frisco’s (value: $150) was eating and drinking and couldn’t stop eating and drinking the fabulous food. The bill was $178. Oy vey, the couple worried. No worry, said the waiter. If Greg says it’s a dinner for two, it’s a dinner for two. Greg Kalina is the MAN and he has staked us with another fabulous dinner for two.

One and a two and a…: After an unsuccessful career in big band, ballet and line dancing, Mr. B has decided the tango and salsa are right, or left footed, for him. And what better way to start out than during the libre (free admission) Musicarte de Fort Worth, the fabulosa fiesta all day this Friday and Saturday in Sundance Square. There’s music, there’s juried art, there’s food, there’s family events and it’s all LIBRE. (Wasn’t Luche Libre a wrestler?). John Gonzalez of Texas Wesleyan and Jay Downie of Downtown Fort Worth Inc. are big timers and got us two special VIP packages. Two of you and three of your Coors buds will get special treatment in the hospitality area, plus free food and drink for both days. The event is produced by the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by The T, American Airlines, BNSF Railway, Sundance Square and Coors Distributing Company.

Big Mac goes wild: Not sure what kind of wild games are cooking, but David Goodroe of Designs for Living is french frying the Ronald McDonald House fundraiser this Friday night and he’s got a couple of tickets ($150 each---holy Ray Kroc) to the event. It’s described as “camo chic”; Mr. B has the chic, but not the camo. The fun-draiser starts at 6:30; you don’t have to drive thru because you get to stay all evening at the Fort Worth Club and it’s definitely not from the $1 menu.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

The Lone Star Film Society hosted a members-only Vision Fort Worth event last week at the Four Day Weekend theatre. A series of short films were shown, giving the group a feel for what's to come at the Lone Star Film Festival in November.

Zoots me fine: Lizz Pulliam is putting the Community into Community Bank. All the tellers pooled their money to sponsor the children’s shows at Casa Mañana and you can reap the dividends. This Saturday, during the 5 p.m. Jungle Book performance, species from the Fort Worth Zoo will be an added attraction and Lizz is offering a family four-pack of tickets.

Grimebusters: Jerry (Mr. Clean) Miller was lamenting all the rain lately. Jerry, you see, is the car wash guru and his customers at Cityview Car Wash & Oil Change don’t wash much during rainy days. Oops, the customers wash; they just don’t wash their cars. But the rain is soon to be gone and sunny days will be here again, so jump in line at Cityview because we’ve got two $50 gift cards good for any of its services.

Can’t duck the barbs: Laney Yarber has a very short elevator speech. “Hi, I’m Laney Yarber of Aflac. I work for the duck.” During introductions at a recent Chamber gathering, she was followed by Terry Sutton of ServiceMaster Advanced Restorations. “We do duck(ed) cleaning,” he quacked.

Divided we live another day: Brendan Fenno, a Capital One banker, has a cousin playing football for SMU and a wife that is a TCU grad. Brendan says he was THAT guy "wearing a TCU hat and an SMU shirt. Expressing my neutrality thusly."

Great divide: Decker Jones attorney Patricia Cole has a 25-year-old and a five-year-old.

And the winners are…: 2010 Chamber Small Business of the Year applications are due in next Friday, Oct. 16, and Mr. B won’t have to work his because YOU did not nominate him. Sigh! One of the 2009 winners –Mike Micallef of Reata – says listening to employees and sharing the rewards of growth have been factors in its success. “We have the greatest team,” he says. “I and the general managers set aside time to sit down and talk with employees. A close relationship is extremely important.”

Not blowing smoke: Susan Cross-Taylor says she played clarinet for six years. The development coordinator for Lena Pope Home points out that “Where clarinets go, treble follows.”

Times they are a changin’: Joseph Baldwin of Safety Resources, is lamenting that a child born this century will probably never 1) dial on a rotary phone; 2) roll down a car window; 3) type on a typewriter; 4) lick a stamp; 5) drink from a garden hose and 6) give exact change at a cash register.

A good bet: If it is casino gaming and marketing, there is a good chance Concussion is involved. The agency just added Konami Gaming into one of its slots.

Free tips on sales: Management consultant Jim Cross of CrossGroup Inc. gave a skills presentation seminar to some Newz-E-Letter readers. Couple of suggestions from Jim:

  • A speaker’s lack of confidence leaves the audience wondering about your competence.
  • Think about the 6 x 6 rule when doing a PowerPoint presentation. No more than six words per line and six lines per slide.

Aced this networking: How would you like to invite a client out for a round of golf and said client gets a hole in one? Chamber golf sponser GDF Suez Energy Resources invited Arnold Garza of Alcon Labs to golf and gab, and Arnold aced the 17th hole of the north course at Ridglea Country Club. It wasn’t the “hole-in-one-win-a-car” hole, but he did win a GPS Navigation System from Mac Churchill, the auto man.

Support the troops: Texas Woman’s University has signed on as a Newz-E-Letter sponsor to support Mr. B and his 13 editors. Promoting its EMBA program, something Mr. B is not smart enough to get near.

Helping the economy: Dane Young of Trilogy Payment Systems is getting married, going on a honeymoon and moving into a new house. He met his intended at a Leads Group meeting. He also has picked up a new email moniker—creditcardguy.

Need a laugh? Ask Paul McKinney of the real estate company bearing his name how many Aggies it takes to resurrect a sprinkler system.

Need another laugh? Fort Worth ISD super Dr. Melody Johnson is in her fifth year at the helm. Mr. B is in his fifth year under the influence of too many editors. Symmetry? Serendipity?

And this little piggy…: Fort Worth ISD officials, dining over pork ribs, pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon and honey-baked ham, mapped out super preparations to combat swine flu this school year, including teaching “proper cough etiquette.” Click here to see all it is doing to keep kids healthy.

Back in the old days…: Don Helm of Southwest Professional Associates has just started his 25th year as a Chamber Action Ambassador, and we’re seeing that the “action” part has not slowed down.

T is an A+: The T’s Cowboys Shuttle pre- and post-game for $5 roundtrip is drawing rave reviews and hundreds of riders.

This honor not Bush League: When the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame holds its 2009 Hall of Fame induction luncheon Oct. 16 at Will Rogers, it also will honor former first lady Laura W. Bush as the Gloria Lupton Tennison Pioneer Award winner for her decades-long commitment to literacy. Wonder if her husband will tag along.

Sleep aide: Here’s a yawner job … Ray, the husband of Deborah Hansen of Southwest Gastroenterology Clinic, reads computer printouts of patients tested for sleep disorders.
