Four Tarrant County Enterprises Receive Chamber’s Small Business of the Year Awards

Four successful Tarrant County enterprises have received the 2017 Small Business of the Year Award from the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce. The annual awards were announced at Mayor Betsy Price’s State of the City address February 22.  The winners are:

Emerging BusinessAlpha Industries LLC –industrial construction, fabrication and global logistics;

1-10 EmployeesZ's Cafe – family-owned catering service with a non-profit partnership;

11-50 EmployeesThe Fulcrum Group, Inc. – IT services firm providing outsourcing to small and midsize businesses;

51-150 EmployeesSouthwest Office Systems, Inc. –second-generation family-owned / operated independent dealer of document technology.

“Small businesses may not make big headlines, but they are the foundation of a thriving economy,” said Sherry Green, chairman of the Chamber’s Small Business Council committee and president of Technology Team, a previous award winner. “These passionate and determined business owners reflect the pioneering spirit of our city and the diversity of Fort Worth’s business base.”

Recipients were categorized by either emerging business or number of employees, and judged on business growth and performance, sound business strategies and practices, customer service strategies, business challenges, unique and innovative approaches, and community involvement.

The winners were chosen from a record-breaking field of 147 nominees and a total of 12 finalists in four categories. Each finalist was judged on their written application and a site visit by business owners and professionals who are members of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, most of them past SBOY award winners. Top graduate students from TCU’s Neeley School of Business were also among the judges.

The 2016 Small Business of the Year awards program is presented by Northstar Bank. Additional sponsors include BB&T, Clifton Larson Allen (CLA), Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty, TCU’s Neeley School of Business, Tarleton State University-Fort Worth, Wells Fargo, Cendera Center and the Fort Worth Business Press.

After 40 years as a dental hygienist, Janet Z. Capua decided to pursue her passion: food.  In 2008, she and her son, Carlo, partnered with non-profit Samaritan House to open Z’s Café.  She cooked and Carlo ran the business.  The impact has been overwhelming.  Z’s Café is a collection of authentic recipes from the Zito family, 3-time winner of Best Catering in Fort Worth (2014-2016), and a place where everyone is treated like family.  Most importantly, though, it’s a place for second chances, as their proudest accomplishment has been helping 107 low-income individuals return to the workforce with dignity.

The Fulcrum Group, Inc. is a Fort Worth IT services firm providing outsourcing to small and midsize businesses.  Implementing IT/VOIP projects for Dallas/Fort Worth clients, they complement their SPOT Managed IT Services with their SPOT brand of Cloud services, including Office 365, Cloud Backup and Cloud File Sync.  Now in their 15th year of business, their team continues to encourage community service by contributing locally, donating time to the Community Storehouse and coaching Special Olympics sports.  They pride themselves in having earned  Digium’s prestigious 2016 Pinnacle Partner Award for a 4th time, and are honored to serve on their Partner Advisory Board.
