Fort Worth Chamber hosts second Leaders Online event: Setting up a Virtual Office

Posted on: 03/20/2020

FORT WORTH, TX – The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce hosted its second Leaders Online event Thursday, March 19 via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The event, a Zoom Webinar livestreamed to Facebook, has already reached over 2,500 people on social media, not including Zoom users.

The topic, Setting up a Virtual Office, was presented by Kit Ulrich, founder of Defend the Fort, CEO/Founder of Coeur Ventures and a venture partner at FirstMark Capital.

To set up a virtual office, organizations will need:

  • A remote conference or communications tool; Kit suggests Zoom or Google Hangouts
  • An online file storage system like G-Suite or BOX
  • An internal communications tool like Slack

Tips for a successful virtual office

  • More frequent meetings:
  • All-staff meetings Mondays to set goals, make announcements
  • All-staff meetings Fridays to discuss progress
  • 15-minute ‘stand-up’ department meetings throughout the week
    • Discuss today’s goals, yesterday’s tasks and what is blocking you
    • A clean, distraction-free workspace
    • Get dressed as if you were going into the office. Wear shoes.
    • Don’t let work bleed into downtime. Close your computer, take your shoes off, and make some mental symbol to yourself that it’s your downtime.

“As a lot of our members and the business community shift to a virtual workplace, there are a lot of tools and resources they may not necessarily be aware of,” said Chris Strayer, Executive Vice President of Economic Development for the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, “Even the Chamber is making the transition and we’re implementing a lot of these practices already.”

The series, an alternative to in-person programming, was created to assist Fort Worth Chamber members with obstacles related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders Online features industry experts via virtual livestreams to answer questions and guide local employers in situations they’re likely not familiar with, associated with COVID-19.

The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce will announce next week’s topics and speakers soon.
