Torc: Driving the Future of Autonomous Trucking

April 30, 2025

The future of transportation is being shaped by autonomous technology, and at the forefront of this revolution is Torc. Headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia, Torc is a pioneer in self-driving vehicle technology, with a focus on making autonomous trucking a safe, scalable, and efficient reality.

With decades of experience in robotics and artificial intelligence, Torc is transforming the trucking industry by developing cutting-edge autonomous solutions that enhance road safety, improve logistics efficiency, and address supply chain challenges.

Late last year, Torc expanded into the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area by opening a facility in Hillwood’s AllianceTexas development. This new location serves as Torc’s autonomous truck hub, supporting testing efforts, customer freight pilots, and future commercialization slated for 2027.

Torc’s long-term vision for the Fort Worth location is to stabilize and expand operations. This site will play a critical role in hub-to-hub testing and operational deployment along key freight corridors, focusing on collecting on-road data and refining autonomous systems to support the commercialization of Torc's technology.

A Legacy of Innovation in Autonomous Technology

Founded in 2005, Torc has been a leader in self-driving technology long before autonomous vehicles became mainstream. The company’s expertise spans military, mining, and commercial applications. Today, its primary focus is on autonomous trucking—one of the most promising areas for self-driving innovation.

In 2019, Torc partnered with Daimler Truck, the global leader in commercial vehicles, to accelerate the development of autonomous trucking solutions. This strategic collaboration leverages Torc’s deep expertise in autonomous software and Daimler Truck’s industry-leading vehicle platforms to create a safe and scalable driverless freight system.

More recently, Torc has also announced its collaboration with Flex, a world-class provider of automotive-grade compute platforms, and NVIDIA to develop a scalable physical AI compute system for autonomous trucks. The physical AI developed at Torc enables self-driving trucks to perceive, understand, and perform complex actions in the real (physical) world.

Using Daimler Truck’s autonomous Freightliner Cascadias with built-in redundancy, Torc’s work with NVIDIA and Flex is already providing a stable and proven foundation for Torc’s autonomous vehicle technology.

Revolutionizing the Trucking Industry

Torc is addressing some of the biggest challenges in trucking, including driver shortages, safety concerns, and supply chain inefficiencies. By developing advanced Level 4 autonomous driving technology, Torc aims to:

  • Improve highway safety by reducing human error in long-haul trucking.
  • Increase freight efficiency by optimizing logistics and reducing downtime.
  • Support the trucking workforce by complementing human drivers and alleviating strain on supply chains.

By deploying autonomous freight solutions, Torc is paving the way for a more sustainable, reliable, and safer transportation system.

A Commitment to Safety and Real-World Testing

Unlike many companies in the autonomous vehicle space, Torc prioritizes a real-world, safety-first approach. The company conducts extensive on-road testing to ensure its autonomous trucks perform safely in real highway conditions.

Through rigorous validation, simulation, and fleet testing, Torc ensures that its self-driving technology meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance before widespread deployment.

Leading the Future of Freight Transportation

With a clear vision and a track record of technological breakthroughs, Torc is redefining the future of trucking. By combining artificial intelligence, robotics, and deep industry expertise, the company is developing autonomous solutions that will revolutionize freight logistics for generations to come.

For those interested in the future of autonomous trucking, AI-driven mobility, and cutting-edge robotics, Torc is a company to watch.
