UNLOCKING INSIGHTS: FORT WORTH’S DEVELOPMENT 101 WORKSHOP

August 31, 2023

The Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce joined forces with the City of Fort Worth's Development Department, the Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Real Estate Council of Greater Fort Worth to host a second Development 101 Workshop. This collaboration aimed to provide invaluable insights to individuals seeking to venture into real estate development, launch a new business, or expand an existing enterprise within the vibrant landscape of Fort Worth.

Held on August 25 at the Future City Hall building, the event offered a unique perspective on the complex development process. The overarching goal was to equip attendees with the tools, knowledge, and understanding necessary to navigate the intricacies of establishing a business or embarking on a real estate endeavor within the city.

One of the distinctive features of this workshop was its multi-faceted approach with three concurrent breakout sessions, each focusing on a critical aspect of development: Zoning, Infrastructure, and Permits/Inspections. This ensured that participants gained a well-rounded understanding of the entire development landscape, from regulatory frameworks to the physical foundations that underpin successful projects.

Rather than subjecting participants to dry and technical presentations, city staff used a creative “real-world” scenario—a man named Bob was building a bistro—to highlight what processes could be triggered when trying to open a business. This scenario helped the audience follow the steps needed in a simplified manner.

“Instead of a dry talk about zoning or permits, we wanted to draw the audience in with a story of sorts,” said Daunte Rushton, development support administrator. “Giving them Bob to follow helped us explain the importance of each development area step when trying to open a business.”

This collaborative effort between the Fort Worth Chamber, the City of Fort Worth, and the Chambers of Commerce reflects the power of community engagement and shared expertise. By pooling their resources, knowledge, and networks, these organizations underscored their commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment and promoting responsible and strategic development in Fort Worth.
