April 11, 2024

Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Dade Phelan recently announced the creation of the House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies. According to a release from Speaker Phelan, the purpose of the committee is to “conduct a comprehensive review of the advancements in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies (AI/ET)”. Specifically of interest to the business community of Texas, the review will include AI/ET’s economic implications, its current use in the private sector, its impact on employment, and formulating potential policy recommendations for the Legislature to consider in 2025.

The committee consists of five members of the Texas House, and will be chaired by Representative Giovanni Capriglione of Tarrant County. Rep. Capriglione will be hosting an AI Stakeholder Meeting on Tuesday, May 14 at 1 p.m. in the Capitol Extension Auditorium (E1.004) for interested parties to provide input and learn more about AI/ET policy. A deadline of May 16 has been set for the committee to report its findings.
